Biruk was born in Wellega and lived there until 2022 when rebels killed his mother and father. He had dropped out of grade 2 prior to his parents’ death because his family had feared an ethnically motivated attack. Biruk is an only child and now lives with his grandmother in a refugee camp in Debre Birhan located more than 500 km from where he grew up. Deeply traumatized, he has been grieving the loss of his parents and struggling with pain in his ear. When asked what he hopes for the future, he shared that he would like to return to school and one day become a teacher and ultimately live a better life.
